San Mateo and Santa Clara

edit Stevens Creek County Park June 13, 2011 I went here based on Ron Wolf's photographs, and was not disappointed. Plenty of butterflies, including the Norhern checkerspot as well as the Variable checkerspot. Lots of Blues. Tadpoles in a puddle, Mergansers on the reservoir, and even a Kingfisher on the lake. El Corte de Madera Creek Regional Open Space June 27, 2009 Saturdays are full of mountain bikers as expected, but all were polite. Although I ran most of the trail, I still managed to find some interesting things. One part of Gordon Mill Trail was fill of butterflies, including California sisters, mylitta crescents, duskywings, painted lady, and two kinds of what could have been fritillaries, but they never landed. There was also an interesting day flying moth which I haven't yet identified. Later on I got some video of a Swainson's Thrush and a Garter Snake. Very few lizards in this park. Heard more than saw birds today, but definitely heard warbling vireos and chickadees, juncos, and jays were present as usual. Wunderlich Park in Woodside June 8, 2008 Wunderlich has a variety of trails leading up the mountainside to an interesting meadow. Still a dearth of butterflies, though some Lorquin's Admirals near the parking lot. A swarm of ladybugs were in a certain section of the Alambique trail. Otherwise, a saw number of Hutton's Vireos and numerous Stellar's Jays. No hawks, no hummingbirds, however.
